Degrees (Level 4)
22 July 2008 12:24
There are two routes available at this level - art or science. Degrees are courses of academic study leading to the qualifications Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BSc). The BA takes a more creative approach while the BSC is a more scientific route.
Degrees are three years full-time or five years part-time, and can be studied at both universities and further education colleges. Content varies from course to course, so knowing what type of photography you are interested in, and whether you want a more practical or academic course is important. For instance, you can find degree courses for photojournalism, medical illustration, advertising, editorial and fine-art photography etc.
Degrees are self-directed academic courses, offering students time to experiment both technically and conceptually. The pace is slow and emphasis is placed on discussion and feedback from both lecturers and other students. Students looking for more practical courses at level 4 may be more suited to HNDs.
At the time of writing, the average yearly fee for undergraduate degrees is £3000 (full-time). This does not include living expenses and non-EU international students will have to pay much more. For British expats and their children, status depends on a number of factors so check with universities directly and/or HM Revenue & Customs.
