City & guilds offer a range of vocational courses in photography and digital imaging. Aimed at students at all ability levels, C&G courses are generally shorter than National Diplomas and degrees, and lead to recognised and respected qualifications. C&G place emphasis on technical and industry based skills required for a career in the photographic industry. Following are two qualifications to give you an overview of what courses cover.

Diplomas, Certificates and Awards in Photo Imaging (New) - Vocational (7511 ) Level 1

The 7511 course is aimed at individuals already working in photographic imaging. It aims to provide a means of gaining a national level 1 award or certificate.  The course is designed by photographic experts and intended for students to demonstrate their competence within the workplace.

These NVQs cover important issues such as health and safety and current industry legislation. Following this introduction, students will be able to choose which optional units are relevant to their specific job role. These units include: basic image capture, image processing & modification, darkroom printing techniques, carrying out photographic assignments, image capture of landscape, buildings, close-ups, people, events, the final presentation of finished images and developing a business website and/or undertaking freelance work.

Higher Professional Diploma in Photo Imaging - HLQ 4 (4448)

The Higher Professional Diploma in Photo is a QCA-approved Higher Professional Diploma. It’s aimed at individuals who want to gain high level photo imaging skills that are both technical and business-related. The programme covers a broad range of specialist areas including fashion photography, portraiture, laboratory management and moving image production (video).

The course offers a certain amount of flexibility for progression. It could form the first 120 credits of a related foundation or honours degree. Students can also progress to the Master Professional Diploma in Strategy & Development at Level 7, which can be achieved in a photo-imaging context.
